First night on the streets!
Press Release:
Halifax's pioneering Street Angels look set to launch in Hebden Bridge following the arrival of the Hope Baptist Church Minister, Rev. Marcus Bull.
The scheme, which celebrates its third year of running later this month, ran two trials of the project in the Calder Valley early this year. As a result Todmorden Street Angels was launched in May 2008 and has proved to be a success, running each Friday night 9pm to midnight following the popular Youth Caravan which runs Friday's 7pm to 9pm.
Street Angels will operate from Hope Baptist Church in the centre of Hebden Bridge every Friday between 9pm and midnight. The role of the Street Angels will not be to intervene in situations of conflict but rather offer safety for those who become vulnerable in any way.
In Halifax Street Angels has contributed to a 42% reduction in violent crime in the town centre and seen volunteers invest a collective total of over 8000 hours each year to the town. Similar crime reduction results are beginning to be seen in Todmorden, as well as in over thirty towns and cities across the UK running similar projects.
Paul Blakey, Project manager of Halifax Street Angels comments, "Since receiving funding from Community Foundation for Calderdale we have a vision to see Street Angels launch across the Borough. Street Angels is a fantastic way of enabling people who care about others to do just that! It has helped the Christians of our Borough to come out of the buildings and take a practical expression of God's love and peace to the very places where it is needed."
In order to make Street Angels work in Hebden Bridge, local people are needed to volunteer. Although the project is Christian based volunteers do not need to be Christians in order to take part. Those interested will need to contact Marcus Bull on 01422 844006, visit the Street Angels web site - www.streetangels.org.uk. See the article in Hebden Bridge Times
