Salvation Army leaders become Angels
Thursday 26th June 2008
The leaders of the Salvation Army in UK and Ireland became Street Angels on Saturday as part of a visit to Halifax.
Commissioners John and Elizabeth Matear were in the town to celebrate the 126th anniversary of the work of Halifax Salvation Army.
Part of the visit included meeting Street Angel volunteers in Fairtrade Cafe before joining a team on patrol in the town. The couple met clubbers and heard some of the success stories of the Street Angels project including the contribution volunteers have made towards a 42% reduction in violent crime in the town centre.
Major Paul McNally, of Halifax Salvation Army, who became a Street Angel with Commissioners John and Elizabeth Matear said, "Street Angels is a Christian project making a difference in towns and cities across the UK. As the Salvation Army we are committed to putting our Christian faith into action, and it was fantastic that our UK Leaders were able to join us on the streets and see Street Angels for themselves."
