Todmorden Street Angels
Todmorden Street Angels
Churches Together in Todmorden and Todmorden Together (who oversee Todmorden Street Angels) have made a decision to finish Street Angels in Todmorden after Christmas 2009. This is due in part to a lack of volunteers but mainly as the problems which did exist on a Friday night do not now exist - this year Todmorden Street Angels have only actively assisted very few people - which is good news in that Todmorden Street Angels are no longer needed! Thank you to everyone who has supported Todmorden Street Angels over the last few years. The Youth Caravan project will continue to run though - download an update on this project.

PRESS RELEASE:
Halifax's pioneering Street Angels are to hit the streets of Todmorden on 16th May. Following discussions with Churches Together in Todmorden, Todmorden Together, Acorn Centre, Todmorden Neighbourhood Policing Team, Calderdale Council Young Peoples Service and Halifax Street Angels, the date is set for launching in Todmorden Town Centre.
Running in conjunction with the highly successful Youth Caravan of Churches Together in Todmorden, the Street Angels will patrol the town centre from 9pm - midnight initially on Friday nights. The role of Street Angels will not be to intervene in situations of conflict but rather offer a safe place for those people who become vulnerable in any way.
The Todmorden Youth Caravan will continue to run between 7pm and 9pm on the Medical Centre's Car Park, with Street Angels taking the streets once this volunteer led service finishes. In Halifax, where Street Angels was launched in November 2005, violent crime has reduced by 42% and volunteers invest over 8000 hours per year into the town centre.
In order to make Street Angels work in Todmorden, local people are needed to volunteer. Although the project is Christian based volunteers do not need to be Christians in order to take part. Those interested need to read the Volunteers Handbook and complete and Application Form and Criminal Record Bureau check. These are available at www.streetangels.org.uk/todmorden.htm or from the Todmorden Together office, the Acorn Centre and local churches. Potential volunteers are invited to attend Halifax Street Angels one night before starting in Todmorden for training and to see the role of a Street Angel in action.
