HILLINGDON Street Angels are set to look after even more people in Uxbridge, thanks to a grant. The volunteers, members of local churches who help out people who have been out drinking in town on Friday nights, have been given £2,000 from Hillingdon Council’s Uxbridge South ward budget. Street Angels started in 2009 and its volunteers take to the streets between 10pm and 4am, to hand out flipflops to women teetering on high heels, lollypops, water to clubbers, and foil blankets to anyone who might need one on a cold night. The Rev Dr June Hughman of St Margaret’s Church in Windsor Street, Uxbridge, was one of the founders of the scheme, and said the new money would allow them to do more in the town centre. She said: “With more volunteers and equipment – which this money will help us provide – we are hopeful to be able to cover more Fridays and Saturdays. “The money can help us buy more uniforms, as all the Angels wear a jacket and hat showing they are part of the service. We can also get in more flipflops and foil blankets to hand out on the night. “We are also waiting to hear back to see if we have been successful with a bid for a similar amount from the Uxbridge North ward budget [the town centre straddles wards]. “Now we just need some more volunteers.” The Street Angels has about 23 members and is looking for people who share the churches’ ethos to come forward if they are interested in volunteering.
