"Belper Street Angels launched officially on the 22nd June at St John's Chapel. We invited members of local agencies and the Police and youth advisory services. We invited leaders of local churches and Paul and Jean Blakey, asking Paul to commission the Angels into action. A commissioning service lasted an hour and after a glass of bucks fizz or two a team took to the streets.
The project has run well since then and we have been very warmly received. We are still working on best possible routes and where the needs are the greatest and think we will have more of an idea in September when all the volunteers have been out and can feed-back. A blog is keeping us in touch with one another. Regular news go there for members only and we have an online rota through google docs which is proving to be an efficient way for us to diary our commitment to the project. The jackets are generating attention and people are now getting used to seeing us around. Shops and local businesses are very reassured by our presence and acknowledge this providing the occasional free cup of coffee to those of us who have weary feet by about 10 or 11pm. It is proving a good session of weekly exercise for some of us who are stuck behind desks for day-jobs and we are all getting to know one another, swapping stories from our nights out. We are building up a social calendar too and so becoming firm friends. The blessings always multiply when people engage themselves in being Jesus' hands and feet and many people are proving highly committed and enthusiastic about the project. Street Angels is good news for Belper town and for those walking the streets and estates in their rather fine, blue jackets with matching ruc-sacs! All-in-all we couldn't be more pleased."
