Police have launched a campaign aimed at stopping drink-fuelled crime this festive season. The Be Safe this Christmas push hopes to cut alcohol-related theft, domestic abuse, and violence on the streets. Police and volunteers will be giving out advice and posters and adverts will be hitting the internet and airwaves. Neighbourhood policing team officers and volunteers, including Street Angels will be patrolling town centres in Calderdale, handing out leaflets and anti-drink spiking kits. Officers will also be conducting pro-active operations to target known domestic violence offenders and providing specialist domestic violence patrols. Detective Chief Inspector Mack McManus said: “The Christmas season often sees an increased risk of these offences taking place and excess Christmas alcohol consumption is almost always a key factor. “Sadly time and again we hear of women who have put themselves at risk on nights out through being too drunk, or of men and women who have lost control and committed acts of violence against their partners or others through too much booze. “Offences such as one punch manslaughter clearly demonstrate how a flash of alcohol fuelled temper can result in life-changing consequences for the victim’s family and the perpetrator left facing years in prison as a result of seeing red. “Making residents aware of a need to guard against sneak thieves looking to target Christmas shoppers, or revellers relaxing in bars will also be a focus of the campaign and I would urge residents to spare a minute to look at our website, follow our Be Safe Twitter feed or have a chat with an officer on patrol to see what they can do to better protect themselves. “I can assure residents that officers will be stepping up their efforts to target and arrest those seeking to cause misery and hope that through our work and a few simple precautions we can all be safer this Christmas. West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson, said: “I wholeheartedly support this campaign by the force. “Irresponsible alcohol use can destroy lives. At this time of year, when more people are celebrating the festive season, there is a significant increase in crime and disorder and it takes up a high proportion of police resources in dealing with the consequences of people drinking too much, both on our streets and in homes. “Anything that the police and partner agencies can do to try and help people stay safe is welcomed. The messages are clear and this campaign will hopefully help to reduce the chances of people being a victim of crime and destroying families at what should be a happy time for all.” Comments are closed.
