February 2014 CNI Network Newsletter

1/31/2014

BBC 1's Songs of Praise programme featured the work of Bedford Street Angels and a moving interview with Fred and Fran Gill. Fred and Fran told the tragic story of son Robert who was murdered whilst on a night out in the town (video left). This tragedy led to the formation of Bedford Street Angels. In the programme Diane Louise Jordan joined Fred and Fran on a Saturday night (video above). BBC Three Counties Radio also interviewed Fred and Fran - interview 1 / interview 2

Northern Conference - this is set to be a great day of equipping and networking - Saturday 12th April in York. Details and booking are on this page. The keynote speaker is Jarrod Cooper and music will be led by Philippa Hanna with a wide range of workshops aimed at better equipping volunteers to work in the night-time economy. Plan to bring a car / minibus-full to this day! The AGM of 'Street Angels - CNI Network' will also take place at 4.10pm and Philippa (who has recently toured with Wet, Wet, Wet) will be in concert at 7.30pm . Press Release for Conference.

Europe and Australia - there are opportunities to serve in Europe this summer with both Magaluf Street Angels and Tenerife Living Room. Street Angels will be in Magaluf for the full season with the local team covering Friday, Saturday and Sunday's between 4am and 8am - in July and August there is a need for Street Angels 7 days a week and they would welcome Street Angels from the UK - more information and to support the golf buggy fundraising click here. The Living Room mission teams are for four months so that you build friendships and become part of life on the island - more information is here. CNI has also identified other European resorts where Street Angels are needed - see here. There is also a need in Australia - see press report - it would be great to see a similar impact made in Australia as in the UK!

#Do1NiceThing Lent Challenge - starting on Ash Wednesday, 5th March, the challenge is to do one nice thing for others each and every day over Lent. The web site has a list of the daily challenges and an article for church magazines, community publications, etc - www.do1nicething.org.uk

Trustees and Vision Day - the trustees of CNI Network (Sara Barrie, Trevor Bendrien, Steve Brock, Andy Burns and Kym-Marie Cleasby) are meeting in Halifax on 25th February for a day to look at the vision and future of CNI Network. Others from within our Network are welcome to join us for lunch (12 noon) and the afternoon session, or you can email thoughts and ideas to Paul for discussion.

First Aid Training - Halifax Street Angels are now able to offer certified first aid courses with special prices for CNI Network linked projects. This course is available to individuals, charities, businesses and organisations. See www.streetangelsfirstaid.co.uk for information. The on-line shop for CNI has also been updated (first aid equipment, SURVIVA jackets, flip-flops, comics, etc) and now links in with PayPal - see here.

Scarborough Street Angels have recently launched Barrowcliffe Angels. The team of volunteers will offer patrols to help the community in a a large housing scheme in Scarborough between 10am and 6pm. This is a new initiative in response to local needs and may be something that could be replicated in other communities. See here for pictures on the Civic Reception and launch.

Congratulations to Steve Windsor one of the Halifax Street Angels volunteers who has received a Halifax Giving Extra Award for his volunteering. You may also spot Halifax Street Angels with Jason Manford in the slideshow below...

Festivals - there will be opportunity for volunteers to get involved at some of the major music festivals again this year including Latitude and Leeds - more details over the coming months...

Following the tragic news that a student in York is thought to have drowned after a drunken night out local projects will be reminding people to stay safe and take care near water especially after having alcohol.

Alcohol and Safety Education Resource - a recent programme on BBC3 looked at the trend of young people and drinking in the North East of England. Some worrying quotes included:

  • Every 18 hours someone in the North East of England dies from an alcohol related illness and it is increasing amongst the young
  • In England alcohol related deaths amongst 15-34 year olds rose by 75% between 1991 and 2011
  • North East currently witnessing a 300% increase in alcohol related liver disease in 30-34 year olds - 20 years ago disease typically found in 50-60 year old's
  • At last count 320 16 year old or younger in treatment for alcohol dependency in North East

As a Network we offer an Alcohol and Safety Education Resource which links situations we encounter on the streets with facts around alcohol and the need to drink safely. This is ideal for schools, parents, youth groups, uniformed organisations, etc and in some towns our volunteers may help with delivery of the pack. See this web page for more information.
