Kathleen Gibson, 61, a secretary at St Bridget’s Church in Bridekirk, volunteered as a flood relief officer in Christ Church Rooms on South Street in December.
In March it was decided there was still a need for the flood support office, and the position became funded through Cumbria Community Foundation, leading her to work longer hours. Mrs Gibson has helped hundreds of people with advice. She has also worked closely with Street Angels, a voluntary scheme run by Churches Together in Cockermouth, which helps flood-victims who are back in their homes. Mrs Gibson, who has been clerk to Bridekirk Parish Council for seven years, said: “I hope I have helped people in some small way. “It would be wrong to say I have enjoyed this role because the people in this town have been through a lot, but it has been nice to give something back to them. “At times it has been emotional listening to some of the stories. “It has given people somewhere to come for vital information and just sit and chat about their problems.” She added that The Rev Wendy Sanders and the Churches Together committee had been a great support. She added: “We have had cases where people have gone to look for something and then realised it was washed away in the floods and they have had flashbacks. “I don’t think people will ever completely forget it.” Anyone who needs advice and support or wants to volunteer for Street Angels can call 01900 826505.
