Angels help so many on the streets By Sarah Kelly THE remarkable extent of the work done by Halifax's Street Angels has been revealed. Since the group was founded five years ago, it has helped with over 700 incidents in Halifax town centre. The volunteers have invested more than 5,700 hours and stewarded at 19 community events. The figures have been published in the Street Angels annual report which comes as they celebrate their fifth anniversary. They say the scheme has helped cut violent crime and sex assaults in the town centre. They also say they have saved health bosses money. During just the last month they dealt with five first aid incidents, averting the need to call an ambulance and visit A&E – saving an estimated £2,500. Since its beginnings in Halifax, the project has blossomed to a staggering 70 across the UK. There are now Street Angels from Scotland to Cornwall, and the Halifax group have had interest from as far away as Brazil, Australia and Africa The Bishop of Pontefract Tony Robinson said: "Congratulations to Halifax Street Angels on their first five years! Who would have thought that the idea of going out onto the streets of Halifax every Friday and Saturday evening would have been such a great success. "Thank you to all those who have braved the weather and given up sleep to do this very valuable work. Long may it continue!" The Street Angels were founded by Paul Blakey with other members of Churches Together. Last year Mr Blakey was awarded an MBE for service to community safety because of the project.
