An award for places recognised as a safe night out has been awarded to Halifax town centre for the third year running.
The Purple Flag award recognises excellence in the management of town and city centres between 5pm and 6am. Calderdale’s Community Safety Partnership has been working to improve safety in the town centre, bringing together Calderdale Council and the police along with other agencies and voluntary groups like Halifax Street Angels and Lifeline Calderdale. Among the features judges rated highly were the developments planned for the Piece Hall and Orangebox young people’s centre, and the benefits of the new Broad Street Plaza and the partnership work to manage crime and disorder in the town centre Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for communities Pauline Nash said she was delighted with the award hat-trick. “It’s fantastic news for the town that we have retained this prestigious award for the third year running,” she said. “This is testimony to the hard work of the Community Safety Partnership and its commitment to making Halifax a safe and appealing place to be at night.” A push to prevent drink-related violence is taking place in town centres across Calderdale in the run-up to Christmas. Operation Northdale sees police teaming up with other organisations including Halifax Street Angels to hand out anti-drink spiking kits and advice on staying safe on a night out. The campaign is aimed at reducing drink-fuelled attacks that traditionally can increase with a rise in the number of people enjoy nights out in town centres during the Christmas party season.
