Street Angels from Halifax who have been instrumental in cutting violent crime in the town by 57% are to receive national recognition in London for their efforts. On Thursday 4 August they will be helped by local rail operator, Grand Central Railway Company Ltd, to make it to a Parliamentary Reception hosted at the House of Commons. The Street Angels will be boarding the 0718hrs Grand Central service from Brighouse to London. Grand Central provides support to local charities in the form of a Community Card which provides savings of up to 50% on train journeys which it operates. Once in London they will join other groups who, together, have been working hard to address many of the social issues arising from the night time economy under the umbrella of the Christian Nighttime Initiatives Network. The Street Angels project in Halifax was started in November 2005. Volunteers undertake a variety of roles to help reduce violent crime, tackling such issues as homelessness and prostitution. Such has been their success that their model has been copied by almost 100 other towns and cities across Britain. The Parliamentary Reception will be hosted by Stephen Timms MP, Shadow Minister for Employment and Labour’s Vice Chairman for Faith Groups. Only recently the Halifax MP, Linda Riordan, joined the Street Angels for a night to see first hand the changes they have brought about. She is calling for other MPs to take time this summer to visit projects in their own areas. Founder of the Street Angels, Paul Blakey MBE, said: “We are most grateful to our local rail operator, Grand Central Railway, for their generosity in allowing us to travel to this important event at a heavily reduced rate.
