No room in the Inn in Cleethorpes? We all know the story of Mary and Joseph arriving in Bethlehem and not being able to find somewhere to stay……….. Well what about the guy visiting Cleethorpes for the weekend? Not as desperate as Mary and Joseph about to become parents, but he was a young man alone and vulnerable in a strange town. He was slightly drunk and had become separated from his friends. He had forgotten which hotel he was booked into. Street Angels spotted him and were able to help him work out which hotel he was booked into, stay with him while he bought some chips, and see him safely into a taxi. Nearly 100 towns and cities across the UK have adapted similar schemes to the Street Angels that patrol Cleethorpes on Saturday nights in order to offer help where required and to provide a reassuring presence. Their aim is to help make their night time communities as safe, and as much fun, as possible. This month, as the festive spirit flows during the countdown to Christmas and revellers spill out from pubs and clubs, the volunteer Street Angels are potentially facing their busiest time of the year. Inebriation can cause revellers to become disorientated and vulnerable, and for many people Christmas can be a particularly stressful or lonely time, leaving them in need of support. Jackie Fortune, Street Angel co-ordinator for N E Lincolnshire, said "Many of the folk we help have got themselves into trouble of one sort or another because they have overindulged even before they have left home. One of the keys to a great, safe and trouble free night out is to know your limit and to stick to it" Jackie added "May we take this opportunity to wish the volunteers, supporters, those we meet and all those we help a very Merry Christmas" Street Angels have helped approximately 100 vulnerable people during 2012.
