A TEAM of guardian angels is watching over people in need on the streets has been nominated for a Pride of South Tyneside Award. South Tyneside Street Angels are a tireless group of volunteers who patrol South Shields town centre late at night, helping revellers, the homeless and others in need. Andrew Bailey, CCTV systems manager at South Tyneside Council, has nominated the team in the Safer Neighbourhoods category. He said: “About 12 volunteers have committed their own time to help South Shields become a safer place for people to socialise on a night. “They go out on Fridays and Saturdays and offer help and advice, simple first aid, flip flops to the girls to stop them cutting their feet when they walk home barefoot, space blankets to protect from the cold and bottles of water. “They have stayed with young people who have been in distress, and called ambulances when needed, as well as helping to escort folk to taxis when they have had too much to drink. “Even in the freezing conditions we had over Christmas and into the new year, they were helping out those who needed it. “I think they all deserve some recognition – and perhaps a medal.” South Tyneside Street Angels is part of Churches Together in South Tyneside. Co-ordinator Pauline Bittlestone said: “Everyone is thrilled to be nominated. We know what we do makes a difference, as we always get a great reception from the young people on the street, the taxi drivers, police and door staff. “The Angels are often called ‘legends’. We get high-fived and hugged regularly. We have even been sung to on occasion. “Parents have told us how glad they are to know we are around when their children are out socialising. “On a personal note, I feel privileged to be part of such an amazing team.” The Pride of South Tyneside Awards, organised by the Gazette, South Tyneside Council and the Customs House, honour the borough’s unsung heroes in 10 categories. The ceremony will be held at the Temple Park Centre in South Shields on Sunday, April 28. The closing date for entries has been extended until today. Comments are closed.
