An article from Peterlee Star about a potential new Town Pastors project: Pastors could be dishing out lollipops and flipflops in a sweet scheme to combat binge-drinking on the streets of Peterlee. Members of the Living Waters Church, which meets at the Guide’s Hut in the town’s O’Neill Drive, have teamed up with Peterlee Police on plans to help make the streets a safer place . Just like 70s’ TV cop Kojak, who loved lollipops, the pastors hope to bring peace to the streets by supporting those who need help. The lollipops would be to give people, including drinkers, a sugar boost, and the flip flops would be for those who have lost their shoes, often when a little worse for wear. Assistant pastor Barry Wilson, who lives in the town, said: “This scheme would help to forge relationships in the community. “Also, when was the last time you saw someone in a fight with a lollipop in their mouth?” The church has already been running a similar scheme in Hartlepool and helped to reduce crime there. Inspector Dave Coxon, of Peterlee Police, said: “We are working closely with the street pastors and planning how they can help the local community reduce binge-drinking and anti-social behaviour. “We are looking at the training we are going to deliver to the street pastors including how to deal with certain types of incidents.” It is hoped that the pastors would be on patrol by the end of the year.
