Street Angels Leeds Project Coordinator

Could you lead a team of people seeking to show and share God’s love in the nightlife of Leeds?
Could you represent the church through partnership work with the city-centre’s agencies?
Could you develop this project into one which seeks to shape a culture as well as respond to its needs?
 
The Street Angels project began in January 2012 and is one of 100 projects across the UK which seeks to show care and compassion in the city’s nightlife. We currently serve on Friday nights and hope to develop and expand our patrols. 
 
The co-ordinator will lead patrols at night, and play a key role in the safety partnerships of the city-centre during the day. 
 
We are looking for someone who is able to lead and co-ordinate a diverse team, oversee and manage the project, and network well with churches, partner agencies, and similar projects. 

Job Description:
 
Post to commence: August/September 2014 (decision to be made in conversation with the successful candidate).
Applications to be received by 16th May 2014.
Hours of work: 20 hours per week - to include night-time patrols.
Salary: tbc (£20,000 pro rata over 20 hours).
Holiday: pro-rata of 5 weeks.
 
Interviews likely to take place in an evening the first week of June. 
Must be available for a 2 day induction plus a Friday night patrol before August 1st 2014.

Person Specification:
 
  • Previous experience of working with Street Angels is desirable.
  • Be in sympathy with the Christian ethos and values of Street Angels.
  • Be motivated and a self-starter; able to work with limited supervision.
  • Be confident in dealing with people in new situations.
  • Be a good listener and have a caring and helpful nature.
  • Have experience of managing volunteers.
  • Be organised and efficient.
  • Be an excellent communicator; in front of groups of people, on a one to one basis and in writing.
  • Be computer literate, with a working knowledge of word, excel and power point packages.
  • Experience of charitable fundraising.


Duties of the Post:

 
To manage the project
  • To oversee the project and be accountable for its work, development and budget to the steering group, the employer and partner agencies.
  • To produce regular reports for the different agencies involved including preparing regular updates on the website.
  • To work in partnership with the Police, local authority and other city-center referral agencies including being aware of the available support offered within the authority and be responsible for referral procedures.
  • To ensure that Street Angel volunteers adhere to the code of conduct and other policies and procedures.
  • To support the Steering Group and Employer in raising funds for the project.
  • To carry out administrative duties and follow established procedures including keeping and maintaining records.
  • To attend appropriate city–centre forums to build networks and strengthen partnerships (eg. Pubwatch, DCSP).
  • To facilitate the prayer support between Street Angels, the Churches of Leeds and the CNI national network.
  • To coordinate and lead the recruitment, checking, training, deployment and ongoing support of the volunteer Street Angels.
  • To maintain appropriate levels of Street Angels resources and ensure they are kept securely and safely.
 
To work towards the development of the project
  • To develop and implement strategies to promote the Street Angels project in Leeds, including with presentations on the work of Street Angels in a variety of contexts including churches, schools, universities, police and local council. 
  • To promote the work of the Street Angels with an emphasis upon recruitment of new volunteers and gaining support, especially through the use of social media & the Street Angels website.
  • To explore increasing the presence of Street Angels on the streets of Leeds – in particular, looking to start patrols in Headingley, and on a Saturday night in the city – centre and working with CNI to develop the work of initiatives such as Festival Angels.
  • To explore awareness and preventative work in schools around the issues of personal safety and sensible drinking habits.
  • To constantly assess new areas of need in the city-centre within the night-time economy and look at how Street Angels can work within these areas, and any other area of work as guided by the steering group.
 
Key Working Relationships:
  • The employer, Leeds Minster, who will also provide line-management.
  • The Street Angels steering group which the co-ordinator will attend and facilitate, and who meet monthly.
  • City-centre agencies such as West Yorkshire Police, British Transport Police, Leeds City Council Community Safety team, Pubwatch and Business against Crime in Leeds (BACIL).
