VOLUNTEERS who boost safety on the streets are trying to secure their team’s future with a huge refurbishment project.
Halifax Street Angels are giving their base on Crossley Street a total make-over so they can raise money to continue their patrols here and across the rest of the country. The group is hoping to turn the Fairtrade Cafe into Angels Rest - a cafe which would be open to the public which would also have a function room above available to hire and able to cater for around 40 people. Founder of the Street Angels Paul Blakey said; “Funding streams are drying up left, right and centre and we thought this would be a way of making ourselves self-sustaining. “There is a shortage of function space in Halifax and once Broad Street is finished that end of town will become busier.” He said the space will also be used for young people to meet and work is already under way to try to help youths currently congregating at Halifax Bus Station. A team of 20 from Lloyds Banking Group gave up some of their time to take part in the refurbishment work which has so far included knocking down a wall, painting, sanding and tidying. The group still need around £2,500 for furniture and cafe equipment. Anyone who can help should contact Mr Blakey at [email protected]. Last month the Street Angels became winners of Prime Minister David Cameron’s Big Society Award. The Street Angels started with a team in Halifax in 2005, helping night-time revellers stay safe. The project has since blossomed to almost 100 across the whole of Britain and has had interest from as far away as Brazil, Australia and even Africa. Mr Blakey, who founded the project with other members of Churches Together and was awarded an MBE for because of his involvement.
