Two days after Valentines our volunteers were out on the streets of Wellington and in our night café trying to show a little love to the clubbers of Telford.
Our amazing team of volunteers spent the night chatting to people around the town and giving out lollipops to everyone they met. This weekend we gave out a lot of flip flops to girls who had been dancing the night away with their friends and it was a real joy for all of us to see their smiles as the flip flops soothed their aching feet! Towards the end of the night as the temperatures were dropping we also gave out lots of blankets to men and women who were feeling the chill whilst waiting for lifts home. During the night a group of male friends found themselves in need of a quiet space to rest before being allowed into taxi's home. In the night café we gave them some hot drinks and toast and after a little while they were able to book taxi's and head off home to bed. At the very end of the night whilst outside giving out flip flops to a group of girls one of our volunteers was approached by a young man asking who we were and why we were there. Our volunteer explained simply that we are just a group of people who want to help look after people who may be vulnerable. Our volunteer was then immediately hugged by the young man who thought that what she and the rest of the team were doing was simply amazing. He then ran off to tell his friends and they all came over and wanted to hug our volunteers as well - it was a lovely end to the night! We had a nice large team on Saturday: Mark, Marcelle, Brad, Gail, Ken, Carol, Steve and Deborah who all worked from 11pm through to nearly 5am. This puts our total volunteer hours of service to Telford in 2013 up to 110 already! So that's all for our round up of what we got up to on Saturday. Due to a low number of volunteers we may not be able to work for the next two weekends but we are doing our utmost to be out every Saturday night. If you think that you could help us one Saturday night a month then please get in touch using the form below. The only criteria we have for volunteers is that you are willing and able and are completely non-judgemental of people who have consumed alcohol or drugs. Thank you for reading, please feel free to share our blog with anyone you think may be interested to hear of what we are doing. Deborah x Comments are closed.
